Before we know it, high summer has passed and we find ourselves nearing October. North of the equator, the long sultry days are becoming shorter while the balmy nights are stretching out and cooling down. Although we will not be experiencing any of these in Singapore, the shift in seasons does have some significance for us, with the the A/W collections gradually appearing in stores locally.
Whether you are looking to holiday in colder climes at the end of the year or just looking for a cozy cover-up for the air-conditioned office, you will find something to love and bring home from the Henry Cotton A/W10 collection.
Men’s Looks
Inspired by the rugged beauty of the English countryside and Scottish highland forests, the menswear pieces brings to mind the rustic charms of a simpler life. Made for the challenges of outdoor activities, the outfits are made of strong and indestructible fabrics, including British Millerain oiled cotton, which are rain and wind proof. Other than a staple of brightly coloured plaid shirts (to be worn with blazer-cut long jackets), also expect more modern separates like sweaters with contrasting elbow patches, slim-cut trousers with coloured cuffs and fleece sports jackets.
A second part of the men series consists of a more tranquil palette of deep blues, grey and purple. Heavy knit sweaters and thick scarves sporting geometric patterns bring to mind traditional Nordic handmade knitwear. Layer these pieces for a soft, refined look.
Women’s Looks
In a similar fashion, the women’s collection is influenced by the sight and experience of British woods and open pastures. With an earthy colour scheme of red, khaki, green, beige and the occasional blue, over-sized outerwear is a key theme of this series. From a vintage-looking velvet blazer to extra roomy sweaters and shawls, loose and enveloping volume is the order of the day. Create a trendy top-heavy silhouette by pairing a long parka jacket (with fur applications and large hooded collar) with tulip-shaped, tapered pants.
Even if you are staying at home this winter, you will find the flannel shirts (to be worn as mini-dresses), pleat-front trousers and cardigans to be very wearable. In particular, look out for a navy wrap cardigan that will go with anything from jeans to an elegant silk dress.
