Street Chic – Designing Dynasty

Posted By MG Team   /   On October 28, 2010   /   Fashion Apparel, JNBY

The made-in-China tag is almost synonymous with low prices and unfortunately, low quality as well. China may not be the world’s most reputable design hub (no thanks to the flourishing counterfeit market), but if Hanzhou-based street chic label, JNBY, is an indication of what this manufacturing behemoth is capable of design-wise, then there is light at the end of the tunnel.

With a modern, conceptual aesthetic that is conceived with the fashion forward urbanite in mind, JNBY is inspired by the individual’s interpretation of trends and relates to the contemporary lifestyle. With 500 stores worldwide, this particular Chinese brand appears to be doing splendidly. JNBY’s design philosophy focuses heavily on architectural shapes, asymmetrical cuts, soft drapes and creative deconstructionism.

The brand features a breed of sportswear-inspired street wear that is casual, cool and often androgynous. Its forte rests in the clever manipulation of cotton jersey to bring out interesting contours when worn on the human body. Knitwear is another one of its strong suits; look out for the close-knit pieces that fall in luscious sculptural folds. For A/W10, JNBY presented a collection that is based on four main themes, namely Model, Future, Exotic Travel and Elegant Rock. Under Model, you will find comfortable wardrobe staples like oversized draped jersey tops, ribbed knit sweaters (with counter-grain detailing) and a scrunched-front black tank dress.

Things take a sleek turn in Future and Exotic Travel with futuristic skinny jodhpurs, quirky glove appliqué and a beautiful graphic pattern (mixing black, navy and grey). Finally, Elegant Rock is the discerning rock chick sartorial haven with dark graphic t-shirts, leather-sleeved blazers and tastefully distressed denim. If you need help picking out the best pieces from the collection, check out this series of videos, JNBY has invited prominent trendsetters to put together looks with their favourite pieces from the JNBY flagstore in Soho, New York.
